ESG represents a set of principles that an organization should adopt if it wants to operate sustainably in the long term. The goals covered by these principles are: Environmental, Social, and Governance.
This is an increasingly hot topic, especially after announcements about the mandatory implementation of ESG standards and reporting in companies across the EU (for example, large enterprises will have to submit their first report for the year 2025). However, the implementation of these goals should be driven by a genuine desire for sustainable business practices.
What does each factor represent?
Environmental factors (E) assess a company’s responsibility in terms of its impact on the environment and its efforts to combat climate change. Through its activities, a company can influence CO2 emissions, energy consumption, waste management, natural resource management, and more.
Social factors (S) assess how a company interacts with and impacts society, including its treatment of employees and customers, relationships with the community, diversity and inclusion, and product safety, with the aim of achieving a positive impact.
Governance factors (G) refer to transparent, ethical, and responsible management of a company, in terms of leadership structure, diversity in the management team, compensation practices, tax compliance, and overall transparency, with the goal of good governance. If a company has strong governance practices in place, it can enhance its credibility, build trust with stakeholders, and lay the foundation for sustainable long-term growth.
If you implement ESG standards and set goals, and report on them, you will have more opportunities for favorable financing. Additionally, it is important to consider that social and governance goals are particularly important to employees and business partners.
